Джон Демос ще гостува в галерия Синтезис за втори път в рамките на неговата изложба „Panigiria“. На 9 октомври той ще представи своята предстояща фотокнига „The Greeks“ („Гърците“) - резултат от 50-годишен път във фотографията.
Основната тема в неговата работа е Гърция, но тя е представена далеч от клишетата. Демос се стреми да улови същността на гърците като показва ежедневния живот в селата и градовете, религиозни празненства и различни ритуали.
По време на събитието Джон Демос ще разкаже за сложния процес на селекция на фотографиите от архива, в който той е запечатал образа на собствената си родина. Ще акцентира както върху развитието и промените в стила си, така и върху вътрешното единство на неговия фотографски подход. Ще разкаже за процеса на обработка, създаване на структура и подребата на кадрите - всички етапи от подготовката за публикуването на книга, която да обедини различни серии в едно цяло.
📎 За автора:
Джон Демос е роден в Солун, Гърция през 1944 г. Завършва история на изкуството и получава магистърска степен по изящни изкуства от University of Chicago през 1969 г. През 1976 г. публикува първия си фотографски проект със заглавието „The Greece That is Passing“. Заедно с четирима други фотографи основава и ръководи Атинския център за фотография. През 1986 г. със съпругата си Бернардин основава агенция „Apeiron Photos“, която представлява „Magnum“ и други значими фотографски агенции в Гърция.
Между 1996 г. и 1999 г. Джон Демос е назначен от Министерството на културата за директор на „Photographic Center of Skopelos“ – докато е на тази позиция той организира изложби и създава Международен фотографски фестивал. Гръцкото издателство „Apeiron“ става член на „European Publishers Award for Photography“. Междувременно той се отдава на следващия си фотографски проект, посветен на темата за вярата – кулминацията му е издаването на книгата „Shadows of Silence“ през 2002 г. По-късно тази негова работа е представена в Европа, Аржентина и Китай, както и в Хюстън и в Москва.
През 2000 г. той създава Изложбения център „Rizarios“ в Монодендри, Епир. През 2008 г. е куратор на голямата ретроспективна изложба на Йозеф Куделка в Музея Benaki. По същото време издателство Actes Sud публикува неговата работа от 1990–1991 г. под заглавието „Albania… On the Cusp of Change“. Фотографии на Джон Демос са представяни на международни фестивали, в музеи и галерии. Неговата работа е част от значими колекции, сред които тези на Националната библиотека на Франция, Maison Européenne de la Photographie и центъра „Помпиду“ в Париж, Центъра за модерно изкуство „Gulbenkian“ в Португалия, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Art Institute of Chicago и Музея за изящни изкуства в Хюстън, както и в частни колекции.

🌱 Галерия Синтезис е създадена през 2013 г. като част от ФотоСинтезис – място за фотография, което обединява най-големия магазин за фото и видео техника, принт център за фотографски печат, библиотека за фотокниги, кафене и пространство за събития.

Artist Talk by John Demos | The Greeks: The formation process of a book

John Demos will be our guest for a second time during his exhibition Panigiria. On 9th of October, he will give an artist talk, in which he will present his upcoming photobook „The Greeks“ – a result of his 50 year journey in photography. Demos‘ main subject is Greece – but a very particular and far from characteristic version of Greece. He attempts to portray the uniqueness of the Greeks and the everyday life in the cities and villages, in their events and traditions, whether religious or political, in fire walking rituals – from the islands to the shepherds in the mountains.
In his talk, John Demos will illustrate the difficult process of selecting images from an archive built over the years, in which he photographed his own country, highlighting both the developmental variations of style and the underlying unity of his photographic vision. He will talk about editing, layout and the separation into sections as part of the process of preparation for the publication of a book that seeks to bring together diverse bodies of work.
Through a slide show of nine chapters, Demos will present images showing scenes of young, joyous children, as well as mourning figures dressed in black. He will make an attempt to transform complexity into order and his series “The Greeks” into a potential photobook.
📎 About the artist:
John Demos was born in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1944. He studied Art History at the University of Chicago and received a Master of Fine Arts in 1969. In 1976 he published his first body of photographic work under the title “The Greece that is Passing”. Along with four other photographers he then forms and runs the Athens Centre of Photography. In 1986, together with his wife Bernardine he creates the agency “Apeiron Photos” to represent Magnum, and other major photo agencies in Greece.
He was appointed Artistic Director of the “Photographic Centre of Skopelos” by the Greek Ministry of Culture from 1996 to 1999. At the same time, he devotes himself to his next photographic project on faith, which culminates in the book “Shadows of Silence”, published in 2002. This work is later exhibited extensively in Europe, Argentina and China, as well as in Houston and Moscow.
In 2000 he creates and sets up the new Rizarios Exhibition Center in Monodendri, Epirus. In 2008 he curates the large retrospective of Josef Koudelka at Benaki Museum. At the same time, Actes Sud publishes his work from 1990-1991 in “Albania… On the Cusp of Change”. John Demos’ work has been exhibited worldwide in festivals, museums and galleries. His work is represented in major collections, including the National Library of France, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Gulbenkian Modern Art Centre in Portugal, the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, as well as in private collections.
🔹 The event is part of the accompanying program of John Demos’ exhibition “Panigiria”, which will be open to visitors at Synthesis Gallery until October 11.
🌱 Synthesis Gallery was founded in 2013 as a part of PhotoSynthesis – a photography hub, which houses the leading store for photo and video equipment, a print center, photobook library, café and event space.
